* * *

After Sawyer had disabled the two men watching Betty and we had coaxed her into my jeep, we all left the motel as fast as possible, wanting to avoid an interrogation at this point. Seeing us leave with Betty, the other guests, aroused from their sleep, were probably confused, and I understood how it must have looked. Were we the good guys or the bad guys, the rescuers or the kidnappers? Soon after pulling out onto the highway, we passed two sheriff’s cars swiftly approaching the motel with lights flashing and sirens blaring. Spotting a pay phone, I pulled over to make a call to the sheriff’s office, letting them know two kidnappers were in Room 5. I was hit with a barrage of questions, but I didn’t have time to answer them right then. The sheriff’s deputies would arrive at the motel, finding few answers. I refused to mention who the victim was. The immediate concern was getting Betty away from there and making sure the two men were taken into custody. A full explanation would have to come at a later time.

We split up with Sawyer who had taken off to do some investigating on his own. He was curious whether Dunbar had any other men in or about town. He preferred to work alone.

Matthew and I dropped Betty off at her home where Hal had been waiting, sitting on the front porch swing. Hal ran down the steps to where the two met in the drive, followed by a long embrace. He nodded a thank you in our direction. Anticipating our success, he had already packed for both. They didn’t waste any time, getting in the car, backing out of the drive, and speeding away as we watched. I imagined that their three and a half hour ride to her sister’s place would be an interesting one.

I took Matthew to my cabin where he’d be able to remain safe and out of sight. I still felt a connection with the young man and I couldn’t bring myself to leave him to fend for himself. After a few hours sleep I grabbed my backpack and slipped out without disturbing Matthew. Now that Betty was safe and on her way to a safe location with her husband, the honorable mayor, I could turn my attention to Dunbar.
